What is a main clause?

A main clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence, typically containing a subject and a predicate. A main clause has both a subject and a verb, and it can be as short as just those two elements. Main clauses can be joined together with other clauses to form complex sentences.

Main clauses can be combined with subordinate clauses to create complex sentences. In these sentences, the subordinate clause adds information about the main clause. The subordinate clause can come before or after the main clause. 

Here are some examples of main clauses: 

The cat slept on the mat. 
I am studying for my exam. 
She likes to sing. 

As you can see, each of these clauses has a subject (the cat, I, she) and a predicate (slept, am studying, likes to sing). Each clause also expresses a complete thought.
