What is a main clause?

A main clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence, typically containing a subject and a predicate. A main clause has both a subject and a verb, and it can be as short as just those two elements. Main clauses can be joined together with other clauses to form complex sentences.

The structure of a main clause. :

A main clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a predicate, and it expresses a complete thought. A main clause is also sometimes known as an independent clause.

Main clauses are contrasted with subordinate clauses, which are clauses that cannot stand alone as sentences. A subordinate clause has a subject and a predicate, but it does not express a complete thought. Instead, it is subordinate to a main clause—it depends on the main clause for its meaning.

Main clauses can be combined with subordinate clauses to create complex sentences. In these sentences, the subordinate clause adds information about the main clause. The subordinate clause can come before or after the main clause.

Here are some examples of main clauses:

The cat slept on the mat.
I am studying for my exam.
She likes to sing.

As you can see, each of these clauses has a subject (the cat, I, she) and a predicate (slept, am studying, likes to sing). Each clause also expresses a complete thought.

The function of a main clause. :

A main clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence. It contains a subject and a predicate, and it expresses a complete thought. Main clauses are also called independent clauses.
