In October 1943, the SS authorities at Sobibor extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland killed all but a handful of the estimated 167,000 Jews they had confined there. The few who survived did so either by escaping from the camp or by hiding in the nearby forests.

The Sobibor death camp was an extermination camp located in German-occupied Poland, operated by the Nazi SS during World War II. The camp was operational for less than a year, during which time it killed an estimated 25,000 to 35,000 Jews. The vast majority of those killed were Jewish Polish citizens, although a significant number of Jewish citizens from other countries were also killed.
The camp was staffed by a group of around 50 SS personnel, including Commandant Franz Stangl. The majority of the victims were killed in gas chambers using the chemical agent Zyklon B. The camp also included a crematorium and a burial pit for the bodies of those killed.

On November 14, the prisoners staged a revolt, during which a significant number of them managed to escape.
